ADVICES TO THE FIRST ARRIVED CAPTAIN IN THE FIRST WEEKS OF JOB ON BOARD OF DRY CARGO SHIP
Captain, Chief Engineer or Chief Officer (it is depend of equipment) and Bosun must inspect the ship more particularly, step by step.
For example, during inspection of one of my last ship:
a. Upper deck, antennas deck. We found some deficiencies:
- the weak securing of three antennas, including radar antenna,
- very rust condition of wire ropes,
- bad securing of some electrical cables.
The crew fixed deficiencies.
b. Life-boat deck. We found a bad condition of the reflective tape on the upper part of free-fall life boat.
The crew fixed deficiencies. We ordered and put reflective tape.
c. Rescue boat deck. We found a bad condition of the reflective tape on the side parts of the rescue boat. Impossibility of opening of the side gates for discharge of emergency ladders due to rust and incredible layout condition of painting at gates surfaces. Impossibility to move the handle crane derrick, which is used for lowering and lifting equipment inside the Main Engine room, owing to very rust condition and missing of grease.
The crew fixed deficiencies. We ordered and put reflective tape. All above was derusted, dismantled, painted, greased and put in present position.
d. Main deck. We found the terrible condition inside the boxes of control opening and closing Mac Gregor type hatch covers. The control levers moved very hard owing bad greasing. Control box was rusty so much, that after touching by hand, ruffled into pieces. The condition of hatch cover cylinders was too rusty. Pump for pumping out water from bow bilge of hold was not working.
The crew fixed deficiencies. All above was very slightly derusted, painted and greased. Control levers were greased and slowly moved, every day during to one week. Regards to bow bilge pump of the hold, a pipe between the pump and the bilge was cleaned and we found about half ton of grain (wheat) inside the pipe.
e. Bow part – forecastle. We found very rust condition of hydraulic pipes of the windlass. The pipes were without grease tape.
The crew fixed deficiencies. We used grease tape. And we informed Owner about this problem - in nearest dry dock it is necessary to change two pipes.
f. Upper part of coaming. The thickness of rust in some places reached one centimeter. It is very important to maintain a good condition of upper part of the coaming, because the hatch covers are on it. And the worse the condition of this part of the coaming, to fasten the wear of hatch covers rubber.
We decided to derust and paint this part of coming in each port,
where it is possible, ourselves, but this is a very long job. Besides, we informed our Owner about the derusting and painting upper part of coaming in the nearest dry dock. Otherwise, in 2-3 years many parts of hatch covers rubber will be damaged.
g. Bow ventilation of the hold. The butterfly nuts were damaged and cover
of the hold ventilation was very bad secured .
The crew fixed deficiencies. We changed the butterfly nuts.
THIS IS ONLY PART OF DEFFICIENCIES THAT WE HAVE DISCOVERED DURING THE FIRST WEEKS OF MY JOB ON THE SHIP
THE AGE OF THIS VESSEL WAS ONLY 10 YEARS
Best regards,
Captain Dmytro Bashkatov
